Updates & Coming Up

Assalamu alaikum!

Our SK's are now experts at solids, liquids, and gases masha'Allah.  To celebrate our accomplishment we will be turning a liquid into a solid by making strawberry jelly inside the classroom tomorrow insha'Allah.  We are now talking about the properties of things that are living, and non-living.

In language we have learned the following letters and sounds so far:  s, a, t, i, p, n, ck, e, d, h, r, m, g, and o.  Alhamdulillah we are learning to sound out words, and to read our morning message with very little help from the teacher.

During Show & Tell the students are learning to present with confidence and ease masha'Allah.  They are also asking and answering some very interesting questions from their peers as part of their presentation.  Keep up the amazing work masha'Allah.

In math we will be starting our geometry unit after the break insha'Allah.  Right now we are working on odd/even, keeping count using tally marks, and  recognizing what number comes before a number, and what number comes after. (i.e. the number 4, what comes before it? 3 what comes after it? 5) You can practice this skill with your child at home insha'Allah.

In Islamic Studies we have memorized our 4 monthly duaas mashallah!  We are also talking about the character trait of "patience", and how we can display patience in the classroom, and at home.

In art class we have been exploring different materials such as paint chips, wool, markers, and paint. Insha'Allah we will be completing an art project with our grade 4 reading buddies today!

In gym class the students took part in a very energetic yoga class in the classroom, masha'Allah! It was very nice to see the students following along so intently.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan for your constant support and work with your children.

Updates and Coming Up

Assalamu alaikum!

Alhamdulillah we had an amazing Pyjama Day last Friday.  The students and teachers really enjoyed coming in with their nice and cozy pyjamas, stuffed toys, and flash lights.  We had the chance to design our very own PJ's, we also listened to spooky stories in our huge classroom tent!  The kids really enjoyed Robert Munsch's new story Pyjama Day.

Last week we really worked hard on reading, and sounding out.  We read our mini story "Red Hen", the SK's know all the sounds in the story, and should be working on sounding out the words.  Please help them practice this at home insha'Allah.

In math we introduced the concept of odd-numbers, and even-numbers at a kindergarten level.  We are still working on reading and writing numbers using numbers, tally marks, and words.

In science we explored what happens to water bottles when they are left in freezing cold Ottawa temperatures over night, thank you to those of you that sent in frozen water bottles :)

In Islamic Studies we are reinforcing our monthly character theme of Patience, we will be talking about our prophet Muhammad PBUH and how he exemplified patience.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan to all of you that sent in snacks for our snack bank.

Looking forward to a busy busy week insha'Allah.

In math we are working on number words, and using tally marks to keep count. We also counted by 2's all the way to 60 today!

Yesterday we had the chance to visit our school's very own science fair masha'Allah.  The children got to learn about many different animals from the grade 4, and 6 students.

This morning the children had lots of fun while learning, they were involved in fun learning centres that involved counting, rolling dice, and matching numbers to number words.

It was lots of fun seeing all the striped objects students brought in.  Jazakum Allahu khairan for your participation and support.

Yesterday we had an amazing fun filled day.

We did some science experiments involving changing a liquid to a solid, and a solid to a liquid. We also poured blue water into different containers to see how the shape of the liquid changes according to the container it is in.  The students brainstormed ways of melting ice, some ideas were: "put it under a warm blanket", "put it in the microwave", "light fire under it", and "crush it!".

In Islamic Studies we review the story of prophet Adam (AS), we also introduced our new du'aa for the month of December.

Short but productive week :)

Assalamu alaikum everyone!

We had a very short but productive week this week alhamdulillah.

Today the children had the wonderful opportunity to watch a delightful puppet show that talked about having compassion for each other.  The wonderful characters and puppeteers made it fun and easy to learn.  Thank you to teachers Fatima, and Seher for organizing this masha'Allah. Unfortunately the time of the puppet show overlapped the time of our library class and so we had to miss library for this week.

In language we took the letters Hh, and Rr.  We learned the sound, and the action that each of these letters make.  We are constantly reviewing the letters that we learned this far, and the students are sounding out small words masha'Allah!!! Today in writing class, the children got to write about their favourite thing to do in the snow.

In math we are learning to count by 2's, 5's, 10's, and 1's.  The children are practicing this on a daily basis as well as patterning and comparing numbers or number stories.

In art the students practiced cutting, pasting, and painting wintery scenes.  The outcome of these beautiful masterpieces is hanging in the hallway outside of our classroom.

In Islamic Studies we are talking and role playing the concept of respect.  The students talked about different ways they show respect to their parents at home.  Masha'Allah we have memorized the November du'aa, ask your child to recite the du'aas they have learned so far.

In Gym class the students practiced doing some somersaults, as well as doing some yoga type exercises.  We also learned a new game called "PAC-MAN", ask your child to tell you all about it.

The students did an amazing job presenting their show & tell this week.  We have acquired a little "stage", and the children get to stand on it while presenting.  This seems to be making a little bit of a difference with some of the shyer students.  Thank you so much to all of you that are keeping up with our schedule and sending in items that go along with our designated theme.

Today we had an amazing day alhamdulillah.

We started the day by doing our morning quraan, followed by our ad'ia that we have memorized so far.

In computer class, the students learned how to navigate the www.starfall.com website.  It seems to me that some students have not used a desktop computer with a mouse before, they were looking for a touch-screen type component to the computer!  If you haven't sent in headphones for your child, please make sure you do so before next Friday.

We read our morning message, and did our usual calendar routine.  We read the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  The students took turns acting out different characters in this story, mashallah we have some really talented actors among us!

In art class we had an amazing time building our own bear cookies out of: digestive cookies, chocolate icing, banana slices, and blueberries!  After making their bears, the kids really enjoyed eating them all up.

SK2 Blog Update – November 6th
Assalamu Alaikum

Alhamdulillah these past few days we have been very busy learning and practicing the things we have learned.

In Gym class we divided our class into 6 teams, we are learning to listen to one- and two-step instructions.  We worked on different types of movement including: walking backwards, walking like a bear on all fours, and shuffling sideways.  We also played a nice game of pizza, and ant tag!

In math class we worked on counting, and using one-on-one correspondence.  We have practiced correctly forming our numbers up until the number 6.  We are practicing our counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.

In language we worked on sounding out simple words such as: sat, sit, nap, nip, pan, pin.  These are some of the many words that you can make with the first seven letters from the Jolly Phonics curriculum.  The Jolly Phonics curriculum is a language tool that focuses on teaching the letters and sounds in non-alphabetical order.  The reason the letters are taught in a specific order is so that the children are able to form words as soon as they are finished learning the 6 letters in the first book.  To read more about the Jolly Phonics system, please visit  http://jollylearning.co.uk/overview-about-jolly-phonics/.

In Islamic studies we learned the Five Pillars of Islam through the song “One, one only one”.  Ask your child to sing you the song, with the actions! Insha’Allah tomorrow we will be having our Friday Islamic Studies circle and prayer time where we will be focusing on the monthly theme of RESPECT.

In science we talked about the properties of different materials such as plastic, metal, wood, glass, ice etc.  We compared the properties of: wooden blocks, and sponges.  We did a science experiment that involved pouring water over sponges, and blocks to see what would happen.  The students were able to predict the outcome, and we discussed our findings together.

GOOD NEWS: Alhamdulillah we have a new play structure in our play yard! The students are really enjoying going up the climbers, and down the slides.

*Please remember to send a hijab/prayer rug with your child tomorrow.

** Please visit our Flickr account later on today for some of our most recent pictures.

Assalamu Alaikum everyone!

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT STRATEGY
The SK2 class is working really hard on making good choices throughout the day.  We are teaching their children that all their actions, and words are their choice.  Therefor they need to make many good choices, and not so many poor choices! The children each have a "Good Choices" card that has the numbers 1-20 on it.  Once they reach 20, they get to choose a special reward from our reward board.  Rewards include: ride on teacher's chair, have lunch at teacher's desk, use classroom tablet, computer time, or have lunch in another class.  Masha'Allah the students are working really hard and trying their best to make good choices.

LANGUAGE
In language we have taken the letters and sounds that the following letters make: Ss, Aa, Tt, Ii, and Pp.  We are teaching the children the correct formation of the letter in capital form as well as lower case form.

THEME
Our mini-theme for these two weeks is: bears.  Students are learning all about bears, we read the story "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?".  We had a fabulous writing class, where the students got to hunt for 10 words, and they were able to copy these words down on their "hunting sheet".  I was really proud to see their enthusiasm and hard work masha'Allah!

MATHEMATICS
In mathematics we are working on ABAB, AABB, and ABC patterns.  We are using patterning blocks to experiment with patterns.  We are also working on counting by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's.

SCIENCE
In science we are learning about primary colours (red, yellow, blue), and secondary colours.

ISLAMIC STUDIES
In Islamic studies we learned about the hijra and we reenacted the migration of the prophet from Mecca to Madina by walking around the school gym 28 times each!  At times we were taking big steps (walking on mountains), and other times we were bopping up and down as if we were on camels.  We are working on memorizing the nasheed "tala'al badru alaina", and our du'aa for the month of October.  "Allahumma allif baina qulubina, wa asleh thata bainina wa ahdina subulassalam".

ART
In art the students had a chance to be creative and produce their very own unique creation.  We provided them with different art, and building materials and the students designed and created their very own masterpieces!

Proud teacher of amazing students,

Safiah Aghliw

Mix & Match Day

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

this coming Thursday is our second spirit day of the year!  Below are the details:

Wednesday 22 October 2014

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,

Alhamdulillah we are having a very productive week so far.

SHOW & TELL
Thank you to all of you for reminding your children to bring in the requested items on their Show & Tell day.  The SK2 students are getting better and better at projecting their voices, describing their object, and looking at their audience.  This week's theme was "something blue", we got items such as cars, decorative items, a plate, a stuffed elephant, a clock, and different kinds of dolls.  It is interesting to see what the children have selected :)

MATHEMATICS
We are learning how to count to 30.  We are also working on our patterning, and sorting.  The students had the chance to count to 30 using a voice patter of deep voice-squeaky voice- deep voice- squeaky voice.  Speaking of the number 30! We just finished our 30th day of school mashallah.  We are counting down to 100 days of school.  Once we get to 100 we celebrate with a huge 100 day themed party :)

GYM
We played the game of "pizza", and "ant tag".  Ask your child about these two games.

LANGUAGE
We are learning the following sight words (a-am-the-I-see).  We are reading our morning message, and other classroom literature that corresponds with our weekly theme.  Today we took the letter Tt, and we brainstormed 10 words that begin with the letter Tt.  Ask your child about the sound and the action for the following letters: Ss, Aa, and Tt.

SCIENCE
On Monday we played a really good game of "I Spy", we also played a visual memory game.  This was done to reinforce some of the things we can use our eyes for (sense of sight).  We also use our calendar time to discuss the temperature (your child may be asking to see the temperature on your phone or hearing it on the radio).  We are teaching the children that we need to get dressed according to the weather report.  If it is 0 degrees, then we will need a hat and mittens, if it is 7 degrees we need a light jacket....etc.

ISLAMIC STUDIES
We are learning about the story of the migration of the prophet PBUH (hijra) from Mecca to Madina 1435 years ago.  The students then got a chance to recreate a scene from the hijra using construction paper, plastic straws, and camel cutouts.  We are learning the words to the song "tala'al badru alaina".  This is the song that was sung to the prophet PBUH when he arrived to Madina.

*NOTICES/REMINDERS/REQUESTS

1- Please make sure your child is dressed properly for Ottawa weather.  We will always go outside unless it is raining or below -20 degrees Celsius.

2- Our snack bank is running dangerously low! We are accepting healthy no-nut snacks for our snack bank to help us replenish our bank.

3- Please send in empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls (the inside cardboard tube).

4- Homework is due on Wednesday, and library books are due on Tuesday.  *Please make sure your child returns their library book in the designated library book bag.  This bag is designed to help protect the book and return it to the right person if lost.

5- Quraan class has changed from 4 periods 20 minutes each to 2 periods of 40 minutes each.  This has been done to help ensure that the children are getting the most out of each quraan period.

Preparing for Eid and learning about Hajj

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,

As you walk into our school you can probably hear the beautiful sound of takbeer echoing in our hallways.  For the past 5 days we have been filling our idle time with takbeer and tahmeed.

I would like to start off this post by thanking our dear friend Sarah L-B. and her family for a wonderful hajj presentation, may Allah swt reward your efforts.  Sarah brought in a detailed poster that includes the different steps of hajj, some zamzam water for the children to share, and a beautiful replica of the ka'ba.
Replica of Ka'ba made by Sarah's family

We had a very successful Red Day today, the students brought in a mountain of non-perishable food items mashallah.  Students learned how to spell the word r-e-d, and got to present their red show and tell item.  Thank you to all of you that sent in food donations for the Sadaqa Food Bank, and a big THANK YOU to our wonderful teacher Heba Reyad for arranging for this event.

A visit from a little pet :)

Assalamu alaikum everyone,

yesterday was a special day in SK2 :) we had a visit from our friend Abdallah's pet guinea pig.  The children had the opportunity to learn about guinea pigs, and they got to pet him and see him sniffing and exploring our classroom.

Thank you so much to Abdallah's family for brightening up our afternoon with this lovely visit.

Duaas, nasheeds, and other resources used in class

Assalamu Alaikum everyone.

Every day the SK2 class goes through various routines.  Here are some of the routines and some of the duaas (supplications) used at different times of the day.

We start off the day by reciting surat Al-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-naas.  Followed by the following duaa:

"Asbahna wa asbaha almulku lillah, wal hamdulillah.  Allahumma inni as'aluka fi yaumi hatha 'ilman nafi'an"

Before eating snack or lunch, one of the students (the duaa leader), leads the class in the following duaa:

"Allahumma barik lana, feema razaqtana, wa qina 'athaab annaar,  bismillah"

Duaa of the month:

اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي لأَحْسَنِ الأَعْمَالِ وَأَحْسَنِ الأَخْلاَقِ
Allahumma-hdinee li ahsanil-a`maal wa ahsanil-akhlaaq
" O Allah, guide me to the best of deeds and the best of manners"

During snack time, and lunch time, we ask the students to eat in silence for the first 5-10 minutes.  This is done to ensure that the children have enough time to eat, and so that they do not choke on their food.  To help enforce this "silent time", we have been using a visual classroom timer so that the students know when their silent time is over.  This timer is a fun and kid-friendly way to keep track of different activities.  You can find it online at:

During transition times, we've been enjoying several nasheeds (Islamic songs) in the classroom.  Your children may be humming these songs at home!  Here are their links for your listening pleasure:
