Last Monday in May

Assalamu alaikum!

Masha'Allah Abraar School is always working on improving its school facility and programming.  Our latest development has been installing a new A/C unit in our classroom.  The timing of this couldn't have been better alhamdulillah.

We started off the day today making some thank you cards for our reading buddies, followed by our morning talk.  We recited our 9 du'aas and our morning Quraan alhamdulillah.

During period three we went outside and played some nice parachute games with the grade four reading buddies class and then we got to enjoy the wonderful picnic treats you guys sent in. Jazakum Allahu khairan everyone for your delicious contributions.  The SK's and grade four's had lots of fun socializing with each other in the outdoors!

Masha'Allah our class has completed its Quraan curriculum for this year, teacher Ibtissam has decided to make good use of the remaining time by teaching the children one more sura (surat at-teen), the class will also be working on crafts that have to do with the quraan and Islamic studies curriculum.

In the afternoon we wrote in our journals about Ramadan, we read some books to ourselves and had French class with monsieur Said.

Have a good evening everyone!

Summer Slide - A blog entry from our Librarian

Dear Parents,
Asalamu Alaikum
Where has time gone, SubhanAllah! It seems like yesterday when everyone was getting ready to go back to school. The month of June is just around the corner and with it is the long awaited summer vacation. It is a well-known fact that during summer, the dreaded "Summer Slide" sets in. However, the following ten steps can help prevent the summer slide
 in your child

1. Take a book. The best way to get your kids reading is to have books available, so take them with you, whether it's in the car, at the beach or waiting at the doctor's office.
2. Summer recharge. Plan ahead for a fun reading-related trip midway through the summer to reignite the love of books and reward kids for reading. It doesn't have to be anything fancy; the trip could simply be camping like a character in a favorite book.
3. Explore hobbies. Reading is extra fun when the subject matter involves your favorite things. Look for books that match your kids' personal interests, such as dinosaurs or gymnastics.
4. Magazine madness. Plenty of popular kids magazines can be delivered to your home for an exciting surprise in the mailbox that makes an excellent reason to flip it open and start reading.
5. Road trip reading. A long car ride is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to enjoy an audiobook together. You can discuss the story over lunch breaks and fuel stops to engage even further with the book.
6. Pen pals. Work with other parents to set up pen pals for the summer and have kids write letters back and forth to practice their reading and writing skills.
7. Act it out. Encourage kids to gather some neighborhood friends and create a play based on a favorite book. This helps kids understand the characters and story lines by bringing them to life.
8. Take direction. Ask kids to read the directions for a classic summer project, like setting up a tent or making a snack for a picnic. Whether they are directing you or doing it themselves, reading and understanding directions builds important skills.
9. Head to the library. Most libraries offer fun and interactive summer reading programs for kids that include incentives, activities and structure to help get kids excited about reading all summer long.
10. Tap into tech time. If you've committed to limiting screen time for the summer, consider a compromise that lets kids use devices for productive activities, such as reading e-books.

11. I will add an eleventh step. Scholastic Book Fair! Let’s put an end to the
summer slide. For more information, please click on the Scholastic Book Fair link.

Sincerely,

Nancy-Ann Brethour

Compassion Assembly

Assalamu alaikum everyone!

We started our Wednesday as we usually do with a full block of educational centres.  We then got ready for our performance on the stage.  Masha'Allah both SK classes did a wonderful job presenting their performances.  Insha'Allah I will be uploading a recording of our performance on youtube, and will share the link soon.

In language we started working on book 6, we brainstormed for words that begin with Y and we wrote the letter Yy in our phonics books.

We are also learning the 5W's: What? Where? When? Why? Who? The kids are learning to spell these words through a fun song and detective game.

TOMORROW IS THE FRENCH CAFE! Our class will get a chance to order food from a French menu, this is an excellent hands on learning opportunity.  Please send $1-$5 with your child so that they can order food from the cafe.

Thank you,

Safiah Aghliw

Grad Photos

Assalamu alaikum everyone!

We had a great day today alhamdulillah.  The weather was just beautiful, which made our whole day really enjoyable :).

We started off the day today with Quraan class with teacher Ibtissam.  During Quraan class students were taken in small groups to get their grad photos taken.

After Quraan class we read our morning message and did our calendar routine.  The children made their special announcements which included: lost tooth (Ahmed), new found ability to do monkey bars (Taha), and new bunk bed (Dana).

During period three the children had Arabic.  They are now learning the letter -laam and the vocabulary associated with that letter.

The gym was being used by the photographer today so we had a nice time outdoors alhamdulillah.

In the afternoon we did not have any reading program because none of the volunteers were able to make it today.  Instead we took some paintbrushes and percussion instruments and had some fun outside.  Please check class dojo for photos and videos later on today.

Exciting news: We are working on making bird feeders for the trees behind our class, if you have wild bird seeds at home please send some in for us to use.

Have a great evening,

Community Day

Assalamu alaikum!

We started off the day today with some time to "READ TO SELF" after that we started our Community Day with a visit from Dr.Kamran (Hafi's dad) the veterinarian, he talked to us about what he does, and the children had lot of questions and were quite fascinated with the worm, tick, and rabbit that he brought along.

We were then visited by two fire safety officers that talked to us about fire safety, right when we finished learning about fire safety we went outside to board a REAL fire engine!  They even put on the water hose for us mashallah.

Dr.Aisha Sherazi visited us and told us a little bit about her job as a counselor at one of our local high schools.  The children asked lots of questions and had them answered by her mashallah!

In the afternoon we wrote in our journals about community day and the different things we saw.

We also enjoyed a nice game of shapes and colours BINGO.

Have a good evening everyone!

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT MAY 12th  IS GRAD PICTURES DAY

May 5th

Assalamu alaikum!

We had a wonderful day today alhamdulillah.  We started off the day with some silent reading, followed by Quraan class.  The class is still working on surat al-Zalzalah, please help your child practice this sura at home.

In Arabic class the class is now working on the letter kaa ك . The class is learning vocabulary that goes with this letter.

In phonics we are working on finishing our book 5, and we will be starting book 6 next week insha'Alalh.

Instead of having phys ed in the gym today we took advantage of the nice weather and went to the city park instead.

In the afternoon the class was working on different cetnre activties while different groups went to the reading program.  In the reading program the groups were working on the following:

RED GROUP: Making, writing, and reading simple words.
ORANGE GROUP: Sight words BINGO.
GREEN GROUP: Opposites cupcakes + word slides.

Have a good evening everyone.

Monday May 2nd

Assalamu alaikum!

We had a great day alhamdulillah.  Our Mondays always start with puzzles!  We had some kids working on puzzles, some kids finishing off work from last week, and some kids helping out with different chores around the classroom.  I love seeing the kids being able to work on different tasks at the same time.  Our big word for today was "self control" and how we need to exercise this at different points during the day.

We are working on our COMPASSION song which we will be presenting in front of the school on May 17th insha'Allah.  The students thought of the words to this song, we are so excited about this!

May will be the last month for signing out library books, we kindly ask that if you have any overdue library books that you bring them back to school as soon as possible.

We reviewed our 2D shapes via a nice game of shapes and colours BINGO!  The students have become so good and not getting upset when they don't win masha'Allah, they are growing up and learning these valuable life skills every day.

Since there is no more nap time, we are now using this time in the following way:

-20 minute of quiet resting time at our desks or on the rug.
- 25 minutes of writing practice in the form of journals.

During period seven the students practiced "read to self", and then they had French with monsieur Said.  Masha'Allah the class has memorized a wonderful song with monsieur Said and they were reviewing their numbers in French.

Please help your child memorize the following ayas for Quraan.

Surat Al-Zalzala ayas 4-5.

Thank you!
